This fact makes the demand of such a properties in Bulgaria continuously growing, most likely to reach the above mentioned level.

Some information about wine-growing in Bulgaria

In 1999 with 117,000 ha ( Eurostat, ZPA1 ) producing 2.9 M hl wine/year Bulgaria was the third vine-growing of PECO (after Romania and Hungaria). Unlike the other Eastern Europe countries, Bulgaria directed its wine industry towards export. Massive planting of international grape varieties in the 1950's were dedicated to everyday wine for the Soviet Union. By 1966 Bulgaira had become the sixth-largest wine exporter in the world. Nowadays export still constitutes almost half of wine produced (mostly based on Bordeaux red). However from the 80's onward (decrease of export to Soviet Union) there was a decline of Bulgarian vineyards (- 22% from 1990 to 1999).

Nevertheless the potential for wine making in Bulgaria is enormous. The climate in the northern part of the country is continental with cool winters and hot summers. It is milder to the south due to the influence of the Black sea and the Mediterranean. Local hilly terrenes create ideal micro-climates and combined with good quality soils they produce extremely suitable conditions for growing best quality grapes.

There are 5 wine regions in Bulgaria :

Northern wine region: 35% of vineyard with the Danube plain and vineyards of Rousse, Svischtov and Suhindol, Veliko Tarnovo (north of Balkan mountains )

Sub balkan: 7% of Bulgarian vineyards around the Valley of Roses (Rozova Dolina)

Eastern: 30% of Bulgarian vineyards in the Black Sea region (white wine in the regions of Targovishte, Preslav and Strandja on the south cost)

South Western: 6% of Bulgarian vineyards in the rugged landscape of Struma Valley (Damianitza, Harsovo)

Southern wine region: 22% of vineyards lying in the Thracian Valley along the river Maritsa

Status of Vineyard register

The Bulgarian wine law dates from 1978. Like the other Candidate Countries, in the framework of Accession Process, Bulgaria has to adapt its wine legislation to European law. The implementation of a vineyard Register is one part of the 'Acquis Communautaires' which has to be adopted by the date of accession.

The Executive Agency for Vineyard and Wine (EAVW), which is a body of the Ministry of Agriculture, is in charge of the vineyard register implementation in Bulgaria. A EU-Phare project 'Integrated System for Vine and Wine' (ISVW) has been completed in a 9-months period (January-September 2002). It is dedicated to the management of wine sector, end-users being i) the headquarters and 9 regions offices of the EAVW, ii) the headquarters and 5 region offices of the National Vine and Wine Chambers. It will be used to establish the Vineyard Register of Bulgaria in the next few years.

The ISVW is a turn-key IT system made of several modules:

Register of Producers for the registration of new producer, producer data updating and producer cessation

Vine holdings (Parcels) register for the registration/updating of vine holdings and parcels and field control data

Register of Viticulture operations for the management of planting rights, grubbing and restructuration

National reserve of planting rights : initialisation, administration, right expiration, and reporting and monitoring functions

Register of Grape & Wine production for registration of wine production, stock, grape production annual declarations

GIS/cadastre : GIS functionalities will be used to manage graphically the cadastre and vineyard parcels.
