Shoumen region is distinguished for its rich cultural and historical heritage. It offers marvelous opportunities for development of cultural tourism.
The biggest town in the region is Shoumen. It's a town with rich history where one can visit interesting cultural and architectural sights, beautiful house-museums of eminent Bulgarian enlighteners, art galleries, theaters and etc. Not far away from the town are situated the magnificent monument 'Founders of the Bulgarian state' and the Shoumen fortress.
A sight of great interest in the region is the ancient town of Veliki Preslav - the second capital of Bulgarian Kingdom, located close to the nowadays town of the same name. It is worth visiting the historical museum of 'Veliki Preslav' where the Preslav golden treasure is exposed.
In Shoumen region is situated the famous Madara horseman - unique rock relief under the auspices of UNESCO.

Spreading across the hills Tzarevetz, Trapezitza, Momina Krepost, Sveta Gora and the modern suburb Assenov, it clearly marks the two dominant fortresses of that time the ones of Tzarevetz and Trapezitza, and the so-called New City, which was formed between them.
