The town of Berkovitsa has 370 km of altitude and is situated in the western part of the Balkan Mountains, 23 km south of Montana, 52 km west of Vratsa and 85 km north of Sofia. Its population is about 17 000 people. In the surrounding areas is located a hill called Kaleto where archeologists found remains of a fortress and a church, proving that there had been a settlement in that area already in IV century.
During the Vidin�s kingdom in the second half of the XIV century there was a boundary fortress. Later, during the Bulgarian Revival period the town advanced because of the flourishment of different crafts.

In Berkovitza you can also see � Clock tower from 1762 which is one of the oldest in the country. Other places of interest are the Architecture Museum, Krastev�s house, the house-museum "Ivan Vazov", the church "St. Virgin Mary", etc.

The nature is magnificent and Berkovitsa is a starting point for itineraries to the Balkan Mountains and the peak of Kom (2016m). 5 km distant from Klisura is the village of Barzia and not far away from it is the Klisura Monastery founded in the year 1240. 8 km in southwest is the Haiduk waterfalls, and the thermal resort Varshets is only 17 km away. For winter sport fans there are several ski paths with ski-lifts.
